Future orientation / Optimism: Four single items were used to assess future orientation and optimism.
(a) One of them (no.2) stems from the Life Satisfaction Index A (LSI-A, Neugarten, Havighurst, & Tobin, 1961), these items were also used in the Final Questionnaire; (b) another item assessed the individuals' subjective distance to death.
(c) The fourth item asked participants to rank order their orientation toward the past, present or future.
Responses to (a) and (b) were given on a five-point Likert-Scale (5 named as "applies very well to me", 1 as "does not apply to me at all").
At the 5th measurement point only the first 3 items were included in the assessment.

Literature: Smith & Baltes, 1996, 1999; Smith, Fleeson, Geiselmann, Settersen, & Kunzmann, 1996, 1999; Staudinger, Freund, Linden, & Maas, 1996, 1999.
